In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise and less akin to earlier efforts.
